John Sebastian, the previous member of the cherished 60s pop gathering the Lovin’ Spoonful, was approached in 1975 to make the theme song for a fresh out of the box new ABC TV show called Kotter. Sebastian experienced difficulty discovering rhymes for “Kotter” and wound up going with the more broad “welcome back” topic. On this day in 1976, the melody “Welcome Back” went to number one on the outline charts. As a result, the series was renamed Welcome Back, Kotter. On the first episode of Saturday Night Live, Sebastian played out the song and flubbed the first verses terribly.
